Disney, Universal plan to remain open as Idalia passes through Florida

|

As of Tuesday, theme parks in Orlando expected to operate mostly normally on Wednesday. Most forecasted tracks of Hurricane Idalia showed the storm moving across Florida north of Orlando.

In anticipation of the storm, Universal Orlando Resort eliminated its Early Park Admission perk for Wednesday, Aug. 30. Outside of that, its three parks -- Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Volcano Bay -- are expected to operate normally with an opening time of 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The extra time in the morning will be used to "prepare the parks for opening after the storm," Universal said in a statement on its website. Its hotels remain open and operational.

The Walt Disney World Resort plans to operate normally, according to a statement on its website. It is also preparing to again act as a staging area for recovery efforts.

Disney has asked its Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground guests to remove any outside items, including decor, and close camper awnings by 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Disney World closed its Typhoon Lagoon waterpark and its two miniature golf courses, Winter Summerland and Fantasia Gardens, Wednesday due to the inclement weather. Disney's other waterpark, Blizzard Beach, is currently closed for refurbishment.

Florida residents evacuating because of the storm, as well as first responders helping with recovery efforts, can receive 50% off Disney hotel stays from Aug. 29 through 31.

Cruise ships, including Disney's, were rerouting ahead of both hurricanes Idalia and Franklin.
